Suffixes

All new street names should end with a suffix to distinguish them from a building or locality name within the local area.

All streets when referenced to their locality and post town must be unique. Additionally, care should be taken to check that proposed road names do not duplicate existing building or location names in the local area.

Suffixes used should be appropriate for the type of street. For example ‘Close’ should only be used for a dead end street or no through road and ‘Walk’ should only be used for a pedestrian street.

Streets in close proximity should not be assigned the same name with a different suffix, for example “Birch Road”, “Birch Avenue”, “Birch Park” and “Birch Crescent” located close to each other can cause confusion when being referred to in an emergency
